Prevention is key

  • To fight germs and keep them from spreading, cough or sneeze into a tissue, or your elbow.
  • Share a smile, instead of a handshake or hug.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly, for a minimum of 20 seconds, and clean shared surfaces.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick, and try not to touch your mouth, nose, and eyes.

What to do if you feel ill

  • Reach out to your health care provider immediately.
  • Avoid exposing others to your illness – even if you feel up to going out, you could pose a risk to someone who lacks your resilience.

Does taking my medication put me at higher risk?

Currently, there are no data showing increased risk for patients taking any specific medications. The CDC lists the following populations as higher risk for getting very sick:

  • Older adults
  • People who have serious chronic medical conditions like:
    • Heart disease
    • Diabetes
    • Lung disease

Should I stop taking my medication?

Do not discontinue taking any medication without discussing with your doctor. Your medications keep your condition under control and stopping therapy can have a detrimental effect on your condition. Talk to your doctor before making any changes to your therapy.


Can I obtain an early refill of my medications?

We understand your concern and desire to be prepared in response to the threat of COVID-19. Present conditions do not call for us to enact early refills, but we are monitoring the situation closely and will update our information and policy if or when the situation changes.

We are committed to taking appropriate actions to ensure you have the medication you need to stay healthy. Should you have any questions or concerns about your individual situation, our pharmacists are available 24/7.


Is my medication safe to take?

Yes, your medication is safe to take. We maintain rigorous safety standards for the inventory in our pharmacies, and follow guidance from the FDA, CDC and U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. We only dispense medications that are approved by the FDA for U.S. market. All drugs approved for use in the United States must comply with FDA manufacturing standards to assure quality and product label requirements.


Can COVID-19 live on a pill bottle or packaging?

It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not the primary way the virus spreads. In general, coronaviruses do not live well outside of the body and the vast majority of transmission is by droplet from direct contact with infected individuals. Patients can take extra precautions by wiping down the external mailing package with a disinfectant wipe before they open, and always wash their hands after. Packages from Express Scripts or Accredo should be opened as soon as possible after delivery and stored based on manufacturer recommendations.


Can you tell me where my medication was made?

We only dispense medications that are approved by FDA for the U.S. market. All drugs approved for use in the U.S. must comply with FDA manufacturing standards to assure quality and product label requirements. The FDA oversees drug manufacturing and has staff in overseas regions (including China, India, Europe and Latin America) in order to expand oversight of imported medical products.


Can Accredo send extra face masks/alcohol swabs with my medication order?

Most of our Accredo medications don’t require face masks. Accredo will provide you with the items necessary for the preparation, administration and disposal of your medication. The CDC recommends that masks should be used by people who have the virus, in order to prevent transmission to others. Face masks are not recommended for the general population as a means to prevent viral infection.


Will I still receive my home infusions while people are being asked to stay home?

Yes. The health and well-being of our patients is our top priority. We are well prepared to meet the medication needs of our patients so you can stay healthy. We maintain universal precautions regardless of the patient’s illness, and will continue to work with your physician to determine the best course of action. We have, and have always had, a robust Infection Control plan in place, and have stringent processes to protect each patient and nurse.

Our nurses wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow universal precautions, including avoiding contact with patients' bodily fluids, and wearing of nonporous articles such as medical gloves, goggles, and face shields. Our nurses are required to use the following with patient interactions:

  • Personal protective equipment which includes an N-95 respirator.
  • Hand sanitizer with a greater than 60% alcohol content.
  • Disinfecting wipes, which they are required to use on their iPads before and after each use.

Our nurses typically travel alone in their cars, and are not required to come into our offices before starting or ending their day. Their work is done with patients in the patient’s home.


What are we doing above and beyond our usual rigorous sanitation processes to ensure that our pharmacies and facilities are clean, and that packages are safe for delivery to our patients?

Ensuring the health and safety of our employees, clients, and patients is our top priority. We maintain rigorous universal precautions to protect the health and well-being of our patients and follow all board of pharmacy regulations regarding the safe handling of medications. These precautions help prevent the exposure of any potential contagious illnesses, like the COVID-19 virus, to prescription packaging.

There is a lower risk of spread from your pill bottle or packaging that is shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient, refrigerated, or frozen temperatures. Patients can take extra precautions by wiping down the external mailing package with a disinfectant wipe before they open, and always washing their hands after.

We’re taking additional precautions to protect our customers and employees, including:

  • Improving social distancing and reducing on-site staff by mandating work from home for all employees who can perform their jobs remotely.
  • Banning all business-related travel.
  • Additional cleaning and disinfection of all facilities, and providing increased provisions such as paper products, soap, and sanitizer, for employees whose jobs require them to be onsite.
