What are immunoglobulins?
Immunoglobulins are proteins in the blood that help fight off harmful bacteria, viruses, and other invaders. IG products are derived from the plasma of a large number of individuals who have developed antibodies to various microorganisms. All donors and their plasma go through rigorous screenings to be sure their blood is safe to use.
IG products became commercially available in the early 1980s. Six indications have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Patients receiving IG therapy for primary immune deficiencies usually receive the therapy for life, whereas those who have neuromuscular disorders receive it intermittently over a period of months, or sometimes years.
Some conditions treated with IG are:
Primary immune deficiencies
Autoimmune neuromuscular disorders
